Years ago, at an uncle’s funeral, I learned that he had been writing letters to his grandchildren since the day they each one was born. Today, his grandchildren, now adults, each have a shoe box full of letters that tell the story of their grandfather. What a wonderful gift.
I wish I knew more about the journey of my family. What events, people, and moments shaped their lives. Unfortunately, generations before us never talked about their private lives and we were taught not to ask. And so we are left wondering.
Letters to a Mermaid is for my granddaughter. She is our mermaid who loves the ocean on the island where she lives. The letters will explore some aspect of my life that has made me who I am today and maybe help my mermaid understand me.
I encourage you to use the question to start your own written or oral account of your life so your children and grandchildren can know who you are.
If you enjoy reading these thoughts, I am grateful.
